'We decided to hire a teacher and travel for two years. Anthony Millard Consultancy met with us to determine our requirements and understand the type of person we were looking for. We were so happy with the process, they screened and brought forward experienced and talented candidates. We employed a candidate as our children's sole teacher for the last 2 years, and it has been a wonderful experience.'

HEAD OF PRIMARY, British Council School, Madrid, Spain

Leadership Vacancies

700 pupils | Coeducational | Day| 6-11 years |ECIS | NABSS

April or September 2012

British Council School, located in Madrid, was founded in 1940 as a primary school and has grown impressively since then to an Early Years, Primary and Secondary School of 2,000 students, of which 700 are in the Primary section. The school is unique in many ways; aside from being the only school run by the British Council, which operates in 110 countries worldwide, it is one of the largest schools in Europe and one of very few offering a completely bilingual  and bicultural education. The vast majority of students are Spanish and they are taught the British National Curriculum, in English, as well as elements of the Spanish curriculum. The School has an outstanding reputation for its quality education and it benefits greatly from its association with the British Council – not least from the excellent professional development offered to its staff.

The Head of School is seeking to recruit an exceptional individual to lead the Primary section, who can demonstrate the necessary experience and commitment to build upon the success of the school, bringing further innovation and improvement to the quality of teaching and learning for children in Years 2 to 6.

To be the successful candidate, you will be an experienced UK and international primary/prep school leader. The ability to speak fluent or at least a high level of Spanish is essential – without this you’ll find it hard to communicate effectively with many of the parents. You will have energy and vision, a flair for communication and will be a team-builder. You’ll also need to have an approachable, warm personality with a sense of humour. As a member of the whole school senior leadership team, the ability to be supportive, collaborative and hard-working will be essential. You will need good knowledge and understanding of the National Curriculum for England and of current best practice in teaching and learning.

This post offers you an exciting opportunity, not only to lead a truly impressive school, but also to develop professionally as part of a worldwide organisation which is recognised for excellence in education.

The full job description and person specification will be available shortly.

Closing Date: 12 March 2012

Shortlist & Final Interviews: 27, 28 March 2012

The British Council School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Check.
