A Week One Summer

About 15 years ago my wife, Denise, suggested that I write a book on my life. She was one of a very small number of people who knew my life story. She planted a seed that remained at the back of my mind for many years. I liked the idea of writing my autobiography but had no idea how to get started. Fast forward to about 3 years ago and a Director of Saracens invited me to join him and his family for lunch before attending a match. Over lunch his wife was asking me about my life journey. I would normally be very polite, but not give much away about my background. On this occasion I decided to tell her the truth and was pleasantly surprised by her response. You see, it was the same response as my wife’s all those years ago. She said that I had a very unusual and inspiring story, she said that others need to hear my story. Later in the evening her husband approached me with an offer to help with the book. The seed of an idea that Denise planted all those years ago began to take root.

I believe that my story will resonate with many people on different levels in society. People like;

  • Descendants from the Windrush generation. My parents came to the UK in 1956 for a better life. Sadly, there were also many challenges for them, and many others to overcome.
  • Children in care and adults who have left the care system. I was in care for over 7 years.
  • Minority teachers trying to push through glass ceilings in the education system. It took a phone call from Sir Chris Woodhead open my path into Headship.
  • Minority rugby players in England.

I have been very fortunate to achieve many of the things that I have done. Much of my success is down to the support I have been given by many of you, and other people that I am proud to call my friends.

I know that mine is an unusual story, full of challenges and potential pitfalls. I believe it is also an uplifting story with a strong and positive message. I always had belief in myself, even when others didn’t. I had friends who supported me and pointed me in the right direction when needed. I will always be grateful to them.
