Move over Google, hello Tiktok and Insta

One of the biggest talking points in Next Gen search trends was highlighted At Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference last week…

Google’s Senior Vice President Prabhakar Raghavan, quoted Google’s own data research, saying that young people are now starting their searches on social apps instead of Google Search or Maps.

“In our studies, something like almost 40% of young people, when they’re looking for a place for lunch, they don’t go to Google Maps or Search,” he continued. “They go to TikTok or Instagram.”

He added that “the queries they ask are completely different.” Apparently they are not typing in keywords, but are looking for a more immersive experience.

While looking for a bite to eat and looking for a school to go to are fields apart, the trends are there, and schools should ignore this at their peril.

Over the next decade Gen Z will start to pick out Prep schools for their DS and DD. And planning for that can’t happen overnight.

Two questions for Heads and senior leaders to ponder –

  1. Are you futureproofing your school marketing strategy to be ready for new forms of search?
  2. Are you hiring the right skill set into your marketing teams to execute it?

Our brand and marketing expert, Harri Millard, is ready to help you on both of these, and to help you capitalise on this 40% of prospective parents and students.
